The use of ice to chill wine dates back to ancient Rome, where wealthy citizens would chill wine by placing it in snow or ice brought down from the mountains. However, the modern Champagne bucket as we know it today was not invented until the 19th century.

It is said that the first Champagne bucket was invented by Madame Clicquot, the widow of the famous Champagne house Veuve Clicquot. In the early 1800s, she wanted to keep her Champagne cold during the summer months, and so she created a vessel made of metal or silver that was designed to hold a bottle of Champagne and ice. This was the beginning of the Champagne bucket as we know it today.

The use of Champagne buckets became widespread in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly among the upper classes, who would use them at formal dinners and parties. The buckets were often made of silver, crystal, or other luxurious materials and were often highly decorative.
